      <para>This study was designed to evaluate the influence of microclimatic heterogeneity, associated with complex terrain, on phenology and to evaluate potential trophic responses to scenarios of climate change, disturbance and land use. We focus on a simplified model trophic system involving vascular plants, terrestrial and aquatic insects, and migratory neotropical and resident birds. The model trophic system is interesting because the phenologies of different components in the model system are independent (cued by various abiotic drivers) and dependent (due to trophic interactions), potentially leading to complex system behaviors.

Plant and poiklothermic animal (ex. invertebrates) phenologies are highly temperature dependent. Phenologies of terrestrial plants and invertebrates would therefore likely exhibit wide spatial and temporal variation across the landscape in response to temperature variation associated with elevational differences, cold air drainages patterns, and temperature inversions. Aquatic invertebrate phenologies are also tied to temperature, but stream temperatures are influenced by different factors than those driving air temperatures and they may be less sensitive to complex terrain.

For the invertebrate part of this study, we are examining spring-time (April through June) flying (terrestrial and adult aquatic) insect activity and adult aquatic insect emergence across a range of sites in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. Flying insect activity will be assessed using malaise traps deployed at 16 sites ranging from 450m to over 1300m in elevation, and with a variety of forest stand ages and slope aspects. Emerging aquatic insects will be collected with emergence traps in six 1st to 2nd order streams ranging from 450m to 1000m in elevation, and differing in water source (spring vs run-off) and surrounding forest age. Insects from malaise traps will be identified to varying levels from order to genus, depending on the group and available keys. Adult aquatic insects will be identified to varying levels from subfamily to species. We will be monitoring overall activity levels and emergence rates over time as well as the activity/emergence of selected key taxa.

Data collection began in 2009 and is ongoing.</para>

      <para>We will assess the activity level of flying insects and emergence rates of adults of aquatic insects across the range of microclimates provided by the complex terrain at the HJ Andrews experimental forest. Our goal is to look at spatial and temporal variation within the Spring season, and to assess the variability among years. Invertebrate data will be combined with plant and bird phenology data to look for interactions among trophic levels. Data collected will provide a baseline which will be used to assess possible effects of climate and/or land-use change.</para>

          <para>Malaise and emergence traps: Trap samples are collected continuously at intervals from April (or when sites become accessible after snow has melted) through June each year. Malaise traps samples are collected approximately weekly; emergence samples are collected approximately twice a week. Malaise samples are collected from single traps hung from trees at each of the 16 core phenology sites. Emerging insects are collected with 4 emergence traps (sampling area 0.3 square meters of stream bottom for each trap) at each of the 6 study streams; samples from individual traps are combined by site in the field. Samples collected are preserved with 95% ethanol.</para>

          <para>All insect samples are examined using a binocular dissecting microscope in the lab. To get detailed information on a subset of samples and general information on most all of the samples, samples are fully or partially processed. For malaise trap samples, flying adult insects in fully processed samples are enumerated and identified to varying taxonomic levels from order to genus depending on the availability of keys and the ease of their use (McAlpine et al. 1981, Covell 1984, Arnett 2000, Arnett and Thomas 2001, Arnett et al. 2002, Triplehorn and Johnson 2005, Merritt and Cummins 2008). For partially processed samples, total counts of flying insects and counts of 3 widespread insect genera (Diptera:Dolichopodidae:Scellus, Diptera:Rhagionidae:Bolbomyia, and Coleoptera:Scraptiidae:Anaspis) are made.         <para>The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.</para> 

<para>Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition. </para>

<para>The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest.           <descriptorValue>The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m).
