      <para>Seasonal and annual rates of litterfall have been sampled at 6 permanent plots picked to represent a range of habitats and elevations. To assess variation in litterfall and decomposition and its role in nutrient cycling across an environmental gradient of moisture and temperature. This study is to be incorporated with others in the western and northern US to study the relationship of climate and vegetation on litterfall rates and decomposition.</para>

          <para>From 1976 to 1990 fine litter was collected in 6 traps (1*1 m) at each site at 3 to 4 week intervals unless buried by snow. Since 1990 litter has been collected in 6 traps 29 cm in diameter (0.066 m<superscript>2</superscript>). </para>

<para>6 traps randomly located on a diagonal grid across the 50m x 50m square plots. Litter collected every 3-6 weeks except in the winter at the highest elevation sites. Standing litter biomass estimated in 10-.1 m sq plots. RS13, RS14 are young growth forests; the rest are old-growth. Litter traps made of 2 x 4 inch wood frames 1 sq meter in area with nylon mosquito netting and support wire. Material oven dried at 70 deg C for at least 24 hr. Litter separated and weighed to nearest 0.01 g. 14 categories for sorting. From June 1978 on,"unattached needle weights.</para></description>

        <para>The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.</para>

<para>Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition. </para>

<para>The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.</para>

        <descriptor name="Long-Term Ecological Research" citableClassificationSystem="false">
          <descriptorValue>The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.</descriptorValue>
