"What have we learned from decades of forest research?" presented by Fred Swanson, Research Geologist (retired) US Forest Service and Emeritus Faculty
This weekend (Feb 6-8, 2026) marks the 30th anniversary of the major flood of 1996, which was one of the largest flows in the recorded history of Lookout Creek in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA). The flood caused damage and destruction to communities across the Northwest--at its peak, the Willamette River came within a foot of overtopping the walls and flooding downtown Portland, Oregon. At the start of the storm over a foot of snow was at the HJA headquarters site and over the several days of the storm an additional foot of rain fell, melting the snow, feeding the flood. Gordon...

Multiple debris flows occurred at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest this week (Dec 19, 2025), following heavy rains. On-site staff noted a few debris flows that deposited trees and soil over roads. Travel on impacted roadways at the HJA will impossible until early 2026. At this point, headquarters has not been impacted and can be reached. Contact the Forest Director if you have plans to do field work in watersheds 9,10,1,2, or 3--which are beyond the impacted road sections.

Old and mature forests are refuge for the human spirit, homes for rare and fragile species, and crucial allies in cooling our warming planet. Join us for a discussion about old and mature forests: why they matter, how we have lost so much of them -- and must save what remains. JERRY FRANKLIN is the guru of old growth: he taught us in his career as a forest ecologist and professor at the University of Washington much of what we know about these ancient forests. LYNDA MAPES is an environment reporter and author with a new book just out about these forests, The Trees are Speaking. FRED SWANSON, a...
A long-term study of salamanders in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest show steep population decline after recent forest fires. Long-term data put population fluxes into a broader context and allow researchers to understand the impact of the recent wildfires as compared to prior disturbances such as floods. The study is highlighted in "Lookout Eugene Springfield": https://lookouteugene-springfield.com/story/environment/2025/04/15/sala…

The new book “ Born of Fire and Rain” by M.L. (Peg) Herring explores the heights and depths of the coastal Douglas-fir region. Peg shares, "Needless to say, this book could not have been written without the work of the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. This is where the scientific study of coastal Douglas-fir forests first took root. For more than 75 years, researchers here have questioned the forest, and themselves, and listened for new knowledge about what it means to be a forest. As a result, this forest is one of the most studied ecosystems in the world. And it continues to offer wonder...

The Ore Fire closure footprint has been reduced effective October 1, 2024 opening access up to HJA and the parts of the 15 road required for researchers to access the HJA forest and headquarters. As we are currently prioritizing research, we will work to open HJA up to classes and groups starting in the springtime. Researchers need to have a site use proposal in place, as usual, and make new reservations for apartments. The Lookout Fire closure and all the research access and safety protocols that were in place prior to the Ore Fire are also still in effect.
