Abstract

The study consists of 16 treatment units – stands ranging in size from 7 to 11 ha – within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. Each unit is has assigned one of four alternative thinning regimes – unthinned (Control), light thin with patch openings (GAP), light thin (Light) or heavy thin (Heavy),. The stands are to be managed under these alternative regimes over several harvest cycles as the experiment evaluates alternative thinning regimes to convert uniform, even-aged stands, to structurally heterogeneous uneven-aged structure. Vegetation data collection occurred pretreatment (1997 or 1998) and post-treatment (2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010).

Purpose: Evaluate alternative silvicultural approaches for converting uniform even-aged stands of Douglas-fir to more complex, uneven-aged stand structure and composition.

Methods

Method Steps

Field Methods - FS123
  • Experimental treatment units with a minimum of 20 ac (8 ha) were harvested according to treatment assignment using an operational Forest Service harvest contract.
  • Permanent plot locations with nested circular plots, strip plots and transects for periodic surveys to determine composition (species), abundance (cover or stem density), and size distribution (diameter, height) of vascular plants ranging from forbs to trees. Vegetation data collection occurred pretreatment (1997 or 1998) and post-treatment (2001, 2003 and 2005).
Permanent Plots - FS123
  • Initially a random selection of 140 plot centers from a 50-m grid of prospective sample points. Plots established in initial survey and maintained unless inordinately disturbed for all subsequent surveys.
Processing Procedures - FS123
  • Minimal processing to calculate sampling unit totals or averages. Processing performed in spreadsheet environment.
Quality Assurance - FS123
  • Data field checked for completeness both on site and during post-collection compositing. Data screened for erroneous entries (magnitude) or invalid coding. Repeated observations checked for consistency across years of survey.
Data Entry - FS123
  • Manual keyboard entry to spreadsheet (Excel) of data transposed from hand-written field data collection forms.

Sampling

Study Extent
  • Sixteen forest stands within the Lookout Creek and McRae Creek drainages, HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, regenerated after old-growth harvest in the 1950s.
  • Sampling frequency: Biennial to 5-year intervals
Sampling Description
  • Randomized complete block experiment with 4 treatments and 4 blocks. Treatments consist of repeated harvest entries to maintain stand density between 1) RD 30 and 50 (light thin); 2) RD 20 and 40 (moderate thin); 3) RD 20 and 40 with small 1-tree height gaps (thin with gaps); and unthinned (reference).
