Abstract
Transportation network locations within the Andrews Experimental Forest. Includes locations of all the roads, trails, and gates within and around the forest. Original road layer was drawn on maps in 1992 and field validated. The road construction history (1952-1990) has been captured as an attribute. Roads were updated in 2004 to include roads that have been abandoned. Gates were field checked in 2004, as well as trail locations. The three data sets were updated after the 2008 LiDAR data was delivered. Roads were digitized on-screen from the bare-earth DEM, and gates were moved to match the new road network. Trails were updated for the 2011 Andrews map update. Many were located through GPS, and new trails were added. The original data is represented, as well as the updated datasets. The road network dataset is in an esri file geodatabase format, and the other datasets are in esri shapefile format, and all are in a zipped file format.

Abstract
- The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
- Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
- The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.

Study Area Description

Long-Term Ecological Research The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Processing Procedures - GI007
- GI00801: Road Network: digitized from 1:60000 air photos, using AP190 analytical stereo plotter. Data was updated in 2004 for the new Andews Map. A code was added for status and identified those roads that were abandoned. Coverage was converted to a shapefile and projected to Nad83 Datum. The data was converted into a geodatabase and updated using the 2008 Lidar bare earth DEM. The new roads layer was attributed with road number and name, and then annotation was created to place the road numbers on a map product. The annotation is linked to the arc-line road layer. This linkage would be dropped if converted to a shapefile, therefore the data is provided as a file geodatabase. A shapefile of the roads can be obtained by request.

- GI00802: Trail locations from Willamette National Forest GIS database was plotted onto a base map. The Andrews staff reviewed the existing locations, and made changes. The resulting hardcopy map was used to edit the existing data by digitizing on-screen. The results were verified by Andrews field staff. Trail names were added as an attribute. Coverage was converted to a shapefile and projected to Nad83 Datum. Andrews staff updated the layer by using GPS technology, and the layer was updated in preparation for the 2011 Andrews Map.

- GI00803: Gates: The shapefile was digitized on-screen from map locations that were placed on hard copy of Andrews Base Map. The results were verified by Andrews field staff. . An attribute was added to insure the proper orientation of gate symbols for the map.
