Abstract
HJ Andrews stream network from 1994 base prepared from Lienkaemper's 1976 stream survey field data and contours generated from GSC Digital Elevation Model (DEM) maps, and generated from 2008 LiDAR 1 meter bare earth DEM. The 1994 base matches the 30 and 10 meter DEMs and the 2008 LiDAR version matches the LiDAR base layers. Stream order was added to hf01302.

Abstract
- The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
- Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
- The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.

Study Area Description

Long-Term Ecological Research The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Processing Procedures - HF013
- HF01301: stream survey, This layer was developed through in 1976 by George Lienkaemper. The first surveys was in April when the stream system was very extended (and included many intermittent streams) and another in August and September (when the network was quite contracted). The "survey"was done using the road network and the old 4"/mile Forest Service maps. If a stream crossed a road, it was extended that far on the map. If it didn't cross the next road up, he tried to track it down to where surface water first appeared and then estimate the location on the maps. The survey consisted of 8.5 x 11 photocopies pieces of the larger map taped together. Added stream order through David Hatfields program called "order" and reviewed results with Sherri Johnson and made hand changes to order 5. Processing Procedures - HF013 (1)
- HF01302: Stream network generated from 2008 LiDAR one meter bare-earth Digital Elevation Model (DEM). This layer was generated using the streamtofeature command in arcgis toolbox, with the flowdirection grid (hja_flowd). Attribute name was added to the resulting shapefile, with known stream names added to streams. Comments were added for streams where features were identified in the field, such as large culvert, no water. Type 2 streams were eliminated as being without water. Streams were corrected for culvert locations through roads. The program to generated the streams did not take this into account. On screen digitizing was done throughout the basin to correct the stream flow, based on the one meter DEM. SimplifyLine and SmoothLine commands were used to smooth the stream lines out, from the raster based linework. Width attribute was added to main lines of the Andrews, so that they would appear wider on the 2011 Andrews map. The geodatabase feature class was converted into a shapefile for distribution on the web. All commands issues can be found in the geoprocessing history report on the esri description tab in arc catalog.
