Abstract

Old-growth and mature Douglas-fir forest were clearcut logged in 1975. Large slash was removed from the site rather than burned. Douglas-fir seedlings were planted in 1976 and 1977, but due to poor survival 4.9 ha were replanted in 1978. Despite planting, most tree stems originated naturally, either as sprouts from cut stumps (hardwoods) or as natural regeneration (conifers and hardwoods). Study plots were established and sampled for cover and frequency of understory vegetation and counts of seedlings and saplings prior to harvest (1973) and resampled annually for cover and biomass of understory vegetation and tree growth from 1976-1981, then in 1983, 1985, and then in 4-6 year intervals. WS10 was intensively studied in the 1970’s and 80’s. The entire watershed was surveyed into a 25 x 25-m grid and then 36 15 by 10 meter plots were established for long-term sampling.

Abstract
  • The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
  • Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
  • The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.

Study Area Description
  • Long-Term Ecological Research
The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Purpose: To study the effects on logging without burning on clearcut succession, biomass, and nutrient pools. Componet biomass and leaf area were to be calculated for all species on the watershed. This information was to be used to estimate nutrient pools so nutrient dynamics of the whole water-shed could be modeled.

Methods

Method Steps

Field Methods - TP041
  • Percent ground cover, growth forms, and species are estimated within the even numbered microplots. Biomass measures are taken for some herb and shrub species species. Various tree measurements are conducted for seedlings, saplings, hardwood sprouts, and larger trees on all the microplots. Tree seedlings and saplings greater than 10 cm tall get tagged. Tree seedlings less than 10 cm tall get tallied on biomass form. Additionally, presence of additional plant species in the entire 15 by 10 meter plot are documented. Trees greater than or equal to 1.37 meters tall in the 15 by 8 meter macroplot area are measured and tagged as necessary. See the sampling protocol document for full description.
Data Entry - TP041
  • Field data is logged onto a series of data forms in the field. These forms are scanned and then doubled entered by two different entry persons. The entries are compared to catch any entry mistakes. The data is then ready to load into the database. The biomass data requires a program to transform the data into measured parameter data based on species by year list of measured parameters.
Permanent Plots - TP041
  • The entire watershed was surveyed into a 25 by 25-meter grid, with each grid corner staked and labeled. Then 36 permanently marked 10 by 15 meter plots were marked with a labelled 2 inch diameter steel pipes at each corner. Plot conditions are assessed with each remeasurement to ensure that relocation is possible. Plots have been GPS'd.

Sampling

Study Extent
  • Moderately steep, small (10 ha) watershed oriented to the west. The south facing slope has extensive xeric zones, while the north facing slope is predominately mesic. A class 1 stream flows through the site.
  • Sampling frequency: 1-6 years
Sampling Description
  • Thirty six (36) plots are distributed across the watershed, stratified according to extant vegetation type(s). The watershed was stratified into 4 habitat types based on seven distinct plant communities. The plot locations were selected to proportionally sample the 4 habitat types. Initially, all plots were measured annually, but after 1981 the measurement schedule was extended to a frequency of 2-6 years. Plots are 15 x 10 meter, slope corrected, with the long axis parallel to the topographic contour. Each plot is comprised of two, 15 meter-long strips of 1 x 1-m quadrats along the upper (U) and lower (L) edges of the plot, for a total of 30 quadrats (microplots). The 15 x 8-m area between the two microplot strips is called the Macroplot (M).

Description

  • An update history is logged and maintained with each new version of every dataset.

Change History

  • Version1 (1981-03-22)
    Original metadata creation
  • Version2 (2003-04-10)
Documentation of corrections in biomass and cover data; WS10 Successional Study, 1973-1989; Editing completed: 7 December 1989; Charlie Halpern, Department of Forest Science, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331; WS10 data proofing documentation (1973-1989)
  • Version3 (2003-04-10)
    Moved database to SQL server
  • Version4 (2005-05-26)
updated data with 2004 collection; also updated revised database rules
  • Version9 (2011-10-17)
    Converted attribute_domain for entity 7 (see entity_update_history).
  • Version10 (2019-08-09)
Restructured all entities. Changed stcode to dbcode and format to entity. Added watershed with spatial coverage. Removed entity 9 and incorporated the information into place_keyword. In 2010, microplot numbering system was modified (see graphic); old data was converted. Entity 3 (tree data) still have a lot of unresolved issues. New data structures were created and data were appended to SQL.
