Graduate student Karla Jarecke studied how water moves through soil on the steep slopes of Watershed 1 at the Andrews Forest. Karla and an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) student, Lauren Roof, dug soil pits to sample and describe soil, and used metal rods to measure soil moisture at different depths. Graduate student Allison Swartz studied how light affects streams. Allison and her undergraduate field assistant, Cedar Mackaness, collected water samples to measure gas exchange and nutrients like nitrate, phosphate, and chloride concentrations. This photo gallery highlights some of their field work in summer 2017.
