In January 2020, Catholic theologian and Andrews Forest writer-in-residence Vince Miller produced an essay with text and selected photographs from David Paul Bayles’s collection, Old Growth Dialog, set in the lush, green old-growth of the Andrews Forest. The essay, titled “A Cathedral Not Built by Hands,” appeared in the journal Commonweal. Little could Miller and Bayles imagine returning to the upper McKenzie valley to collaborate again, only months later, in an effort to comprehend the Holiday Farm Fire. Both struggled with the tragedy and trauma, the side-by-side stark beauty and rapid...

Fire lookouts and the people who operated them once served as guardians of the forests throughout the Pacific Northwest. Methods of wildfire management have shifted to high-tech solutions and many lookout towers have been torn down or re-purposed. As fires grow in intensity and frequency due to climate change, the commitment from solitary individuals on distant peaks has shifted to the urgent need for collective action. The proposed Lookout Landscape project is intended to answer the call for collective action with an inclusive collaborative response that spans multiple disciplines, sites, and...

If planning a trip out to the Andrews Forest, please be aware of winter weather hazards and limits on access. Check our online webcams and weather graphs in addition to the National Weather Service and tripcheck.com to get a sense of conditions. The only roads we attempt to plow are the 15 road and 1506 up to watershed 3 junction. Heavy snow brings down trees and we have limited resources to clean up the debris. The headquarters of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest remain closed due to COVID19 safety restrictions. Researchers coming out for a day trip should contact Mark Schulze at least two...

The 2020 Fires: Opportunities for discovery abound! Written by Cheryl Friesen, Science Liaison, WNF In late October 2020, my husband, dog, and I were tucked into an AirBnB after being displaced by the Holiday Farm Fire. Research requests began pouring in even as we juggled cleaning up our destroyed homesite and re-assembling our lives. State and Federal agencies, municipalities, universities, and timber industry research groups were keenly interested in getting into the Labor Day Fire footprints as soon as possible. The fires were historic, creating opportunities to study a dynamic in moist...

The 2020 Holiday Farm Fire and access to burned forest on McKenzie River Trust lands have attracted writers and artists who want to wrestle with the tensions among tragedy, stark beauty, and hope in the fire-blackened landscape. Former writer-in-residence theologian Vince Miller (University of Dayton) returned to explore the theme of hope in collaboration with photographer David Paul Bayles. Painter Erika Osborne (Colorado State University) visited to extend the fire-themed work she has been practicing in California and Baja. Four book artists led by Eugene artist Susan Lowdermilk visited in...

Andrews Forest Monthly Meeting: Friday, June 4, 9-11 AM For our June 2021 meeting, we will start digging into the theme of interactions, which is the central theme of LTER8. We are going to transition from our discussions of fire over the past four monthly meetings to interactions and microclimates. Responses of species to environmental change may be mediated by both species interactions and microclimate. Our discussions of fire provides a great lead-in to microclimate as the 2020 fires left patches of differing effects both inside and outside of the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in the...
