Abstract
Stream specific conductance and water temperature are measured instantaneously every 5 minutes at most of the gauged watersheds within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (Watersheds 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and Mack Creek). Data is complementary to stream chemistry measurements from a proportional sampler (CF002) and long-term streamflow measurements (HF004) made at each of these watersheds.

Abstract
- The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
- Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
- The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.

Study Area Description
-
Long-Term Ecological Research The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Study Description
Stream specific conductance and water temperature are measured instantaneously every 5 minutes at most of the gauged watersheds within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (Watersheds 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and Mack Creek). Data is complementary to stream chemistry measurements from a proportional sampler (CF002) and long-term streamflow measurements (HF004) made at each of these watersheds. Field Methods - CF012
Methods
Method Steps
Field Methods - CF012
- Specific conductance is measured with a Campbell Scientific CS547A electrical conductivity and temperature probe connected to a Campbell Scientific data logger. The sensor is installed in a small pool just upstream, downstream or directly across from the flume / gage house depending on the site. Instantaneous measurements of specific conductance and water temperature are made every 5 minutes. During periodic (approximately every 6 to 9 weeks) field visits, independent check measurements are made using a portable YSI Pro30 as of August 2015 and previously a YSI 30 conductivity meter. Should the CS547A measurement differ from the YSI measurement, the temperature coefficient used in calculating conductance is modified in the data logger program in the field to better match the CS547A output with the YSI check measurement. In the early years of operation the cell constant was modified to better match these values, but that is no longer done. Additionally, the probes are regularly brushed during field visits to improve operation.
Instrumentation:
- A Campbell Scientific CS547A electrical conductivity and temperature probe connected to a Campbell Scientific data logger is used in conjunction with a portable YSI Pro30 conductivity meter.
Sampling
Study Extent
- Continuous streamflow data have been collected over varying periods of record in eight first to second-order watersheds, one third-order watershed, and the fifth-order watershed in the H. J. Andrews. Watersheds 1, 2, and 3 comprise a low-elevation (442 m to 1082 m) set of experimental basins with Watershed 2 serving as the control. Watersheds 6, 7, and 8 comprise a high-elevation (863 m to 1190 m) set of experimental basins with Watershed 8 as the control. Watersheds 9 and 10 are a low-elevation pair of small watersheds with Watershed 9 as the control. Mack Creek is a control basin and has not been harvested. The gauged portion of 5th-order Lookout Creek comprises nearly all of the Andrews Forest.
- Sampling frequency: 5 minutes
Sampling Description
- Specific conductance is measured in conjunction with the small watershed studies which also collect proportional streamflow samples, measure streamflow, and measure air and water temperature at the gauging stations.

Description
- An update history is logged and maintained with each new version of every dataset.
Change History
-
Version1 (1000-01-01) Study code and preliminary metadata established
-
Version2 (1000-01-01) Data is prepared for first -time online access. Data originates in 2011 for WS 1 and in 2012 for WS 2,3,6,7,8,10 and Mack Creek. Data is quality controlled and put online through at least April 2015 for all watersheds.
-
Version3 (1000-01-01) Entity 1 is updated from September 2015 through March 2016.
-
Version4 (1000-01-01) Entity 1 is updated for April 2016 through Sep 2019. The GSLOOK sensor data is added. Event codes are edited for the entire record starting in 2011 by merging event codes from the Notes data table and adding a specific brushing code. Additionally, the "sys" files were used to capture site visits (event_code='MAINTE') and brushing events (event_code='BRUSHD') for all sites starting in WY 2019 except for Lookout Creek.
-
Version5 (1000-01-01) Update: September 2019 through September 2024. Data processed using FastBridge and GenQ for the first time. Entity 01 contains SpC 5-minute readings with no corrections made; Q flags were used extensively to expedite publishing. Entity 02 contains a partial record of SpC manual periodic checks; the complete historical record can be back-filled as time permits. Entity 51 contains instantaneous water temperature readings for back-calculating SpC to conductivity, using the same method and probe code as WATERTEMP_MEAN in HT00451.
