Abstract

The database contains data from samples collected during the summer of 2001 on aquatic macroinvertebrates along Lookout Creek. Three data tables comprise the database. The two larger tables contain the taxonomic composition and abundances from samples collected using small (0.25m ) emergence traps and pan traps (0.19m). Taxonomic resolution differs by order; for some taxa we identified individuals to family, genus, and species, some to family and genus, and others to family only. A third small data table is a complete list of taxa from the three orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera.

Abstract
  • The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
  • Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
  • The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.
Funding

Data were provided by the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest research program, funded by the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research Program (DEB 2025755), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, and Oregon State University. National Science Foundation: DEB1440409

Study Area Description
  • Long-Term Ecological Research
The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Methods

Method Steps

Field Methods - SA017
  • Used both emergence and pan traps to collect emerging and returning aquatic insects. Sieved specimens collected from traps into bags with 75% ethanol for preservation. Disturbed traps where traps were knocked over were excluded from the count.
Laboratory Methods - SA017
  • Samples were identified using compound microscope

Sampling

Study Extent
  • Lookout Creek at our site is a 4th order stream. Site was located in an old-growth, unconstrained reach approximately half way between the upper bridge and the confluence of Mack Creek. Stream slope was approximately 1% with cobble and boulder substrate. Riparian forest was mixed conifer and deciduous.
  • Sampling frequency: every 3 days plus two 12-hour sampling/week
Sampling Description
  • 10 emergence and ten pan traps placed randomly within a 100 meter section of stream and samples were collected continuously every 72 hours. Once a week we collected two 12-hour day and night samples. We recorded the number of insects within certain taxa groups to determine how many emerged and how many returned from our pan traps. The ratio of return to emergence provided a proportion of return.
