Abstract
  • The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
  • Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
  • The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.
Funding

Data were provided by the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest research program, funded by the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research Program (DEB 2025755), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, and Oregon State University. National Science Foundation: DEB1440409

Study Area Description
  • Long-Term Ecological Research
The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Study Description

These data provide a time series of changes in nitrogen fixation rates, and respiration rates for four common PNW species. The purpose is to understand when these rates reach a maximum. Field Methods - TD018

Methods

Method Steps

Field Methods - TD018
  • During the spring cross-sections 8 cm thick are removed from logs with a chainsaw. These are placed in plastic bag and kept under refrigeration until samples are tested. Two to three samples with a fresh weight of 2 g are removed from each tissue type. These are placed in serum tubes, capped, and incubated at 15°C for 1-2 hours with lab air to determine the respiration rate. The tubes are then purged for 2 minutes with argon, acetylene is injected, and air is injected to give 1% oxygen. Incubations for acetylene reduction are at 15°C for 20-25 hours. Carbon dioxide and ethylene production are measured using a gas chromatograph. Moisture content is calculated after drying the samples 2 days at 70°C.

Sampling

Study Extent
  • Site 1: elevation is 1065m, average annual temperature 8.9 degree C, average annual precipitation is 229cm.
  • Site 4: elevation is 865m, average annual temperature 9.9 degree C, average annual precipitation is 219cm
  • Sampling frequency: irregular
Sampling Description
  • The data are a time series, basically on an annual time step. Regression analysis will be used to test if the rates for species and tissue types changes with time. During any one time the design varies from a split-split plot to a split plot ANOVA. The effects of species, tissue type, or position in the log (top, bottom, side) can be tested.

Description

  • An update history is logged and maintained with each new version of every dataset.

Change History

  • Version1 (1990-07-01)
Original metadata creation. Data were reformatted from LOTUS files developed by Dr. Robert Griffiths in July 1990.
  • Version2 (2002-02-18)
Metadata restructured and moved into SQLServer metadata database LTERMETA. Data moved into SQLServer database FSDBDATA.
  • Version7 (2012-07-12)
Modified TIME field in entity 1 to represent time in months rather than days. Added 2006 raw data to entity 1.
  • Version8 (2015-12-17)
Prepared database for upload to PASTA with new CSV files with proper delimiter. Created truetype date in entity 1, converted time from days to months for entites 2-4 based on 2012 update to entity 1. Ran QC, recreated SQL structures.
