Abstract
SCALER attempts to address the question of whether small-scale ecological experiments can be applied to understand the behavior of entire ecological systems. Specifically, the role of comsumers to stream functional processes were examined by measurements of structure and function within stream reaches. These results feed into a broader continent wide examination within a variety of ecological systems. Rates of stream metabolism (photosynthesis and respiration) and nutrient uptake were measured, as well as the way these rates respond to animal exclusions (used to mimic loss of animal diversity in streams). Aquatic food web and biogeochemical responses in three consecutive 75m stream reaches were measured by manipulating densities of fish and amphibians (natural, depletion, and addition). Additionally, various stream characteristics were measured including streamflow, water chemistry, nutrients, metabolism, stream habitat measurements (wetted widths, depths and substrate), and canopy conditions (percent shade). The experiment was carried out every summer between 2014-2016 in streams of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest to capture interannual variability.

Abstract
- The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems in the central Cascade Range of Oregon. Since 1980, as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics.
- Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition.
- The Andrews Experimental Forest is administered cooperatively by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University and the Willamette National Forest. Funding for the research program comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and other sources.

Study Area Description
-
Long-Term Ecological Research The Andrews Forest is situated in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, and covers the entire 15,800-acre (6400-ha) drainage basin of Lookout Creek. Elevation ranges from 1350 to 5340 feet (410 to 1630 m). Broadly representative of the rugged mountainous landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the Andrews Forest contains excellent examples of the region's conifer forests and associated wildlife and stream ecosystems. These forests are among the tallest and most productive in the world, with tree heights of often greater than 250 ft (75 m). Streams are steep, cold and clean, providing habitat for numerous aquatic organisms.

Methods
Method Steps
Method Step 1
No method step description paragraphs listed.
Instrumentation:
- Dissolved oxygen and specific conductivity: YSI 600 OMS-V2 multiparameter sondes equipped with a 6150 ROX optical dissolved sensor (Yellow Springs Instruments, Yellow Springs, Ohio)
Laboratory Methods - AN008
- After thawing, each sample was split into two aliquots; the aliquot for standing stock was sieved to remove large, non-algal particles, filtered onto pre-combusted and pre-weighed GF/F filters. These filters were then dried at 60 deg C, weighed, combusted at 500 deg C, and reweighed to provide estimates of both organic and inorganic fractions of standing stock. The second aliquot was analyzed for Chlorophyll a and phaeophytin concentration by filtering onto pre-combusted GF/F filters, and using the heated ethanol methodology (Sartory and Grobblear, 1984). All measurement of concentrations of pigments occurred using a Shimadzu UV-1700 UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Chlorophyll a pigment concentrations were corrected retroactively based on Parker et al. (2016).
- The frozen water samples were sent to the Cooperative Chemical Analytical Laboratory (CCAL) at Oregon State University and analyzed for total phosphorus, total nitrogen, soluble reactive phosphorus, ammonium, nitrate, and dissolved organic carbon following standard methods (See http://www.ccal.oregonstate.edu/ for a list of analytical methods).
- After thawing, the samples were sieved to remove large particles and filtered onto pre-combusted and pre-weighed GF/F filters. These filters were then dried at 60 deg C, weighed, combusted at 500 deg C, and reweighed to provide estimates of the benthic organic matter.
- Propane samples were analyzed using an Agilent 7890A Gas Chromatograph
- Macroinvertebrates that were preserved in 95% alcohol in the field were taken to the lab to be cleaned, picked, and classified to the lowest taxonomic unit possible. In 2014, macroinvertebrates were classified by Shannon Claeson, PNW Research Station, and in 2015 and 2016, they were classified by Matt Whiles lab, Southern Illinois University.
Sampling
Sampling Description
- We measured aquatic food web and biogeochemical responses in three consecutive 75m stream reaches by manipulating densities of fish and amphibians (natural, depletion, and addition) for ~40 days. Prior to sampling, each reach was blocked with 3 mm mesh netting that was buried into the sediment to inhibit movement of animals in or out of the sample reaches. The natural reach was located furthest upstream, the depletion reach was the middle reach, and the addition reach was downstream. The reach with natural densities acted as a reference by maintaining animals that were initially found there. Captured fish and amphibians were removed from the depletion reach and added to the addition reach. General aspects of our experimental design was based on a larger macrosystems biology project (Scale, Consumers, And Lotic Ecosystem Rates). The experiment was carried out every summer between 2014-2017 at McCreek to capture interannual variability. In 2015, the experiment was carried out at 3 different size streams, to capture variability within the stream network. In 2015, we focused our field experiment in three streams of varying sizes, lower McRae Creek (4th order), upper McRae Creek (3rd order), and upper Lookout Creek (2nd order), at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) in the central western Cascades Range, Oregon. In 2014 and 2016, we focused the field experiment only at the lower McRae Creek site.
