The images in our galleries reflect the history, place, people, and research of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest Long-Term Ecological Research Program. Images may be downloaded for use in papers, posters, presentations, etc. Please use the suggested acknowledgements. In some cases, higher resolution images may be available from the information manager.
Our archived image library has several older images that don't appear in our image galleries, below.
Phenology is the study of the timing of natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate. At the Andrews Forest, scientists have been studying the timing of bud break and flowering of plants, and relating that timing, across years, to the ongoing, long-term climate records at the site.
HJA Day is an open house and field day at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and Long-Term Ecological Research site.
Images from HJA Day, our field day and open house. The event featured talks about research and management, archaeology, birds, education, fish, trout, and owls.
The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest had record snow levels in April 2008.
Sediment basins placed in the experimental watersheds of the HJA allow researchers to measure and track the amount of sediment being discharged from gaged watersheds. Full sediment basins are surveyed and measured, then emptied, and sediment is cataloged by type.
One focus of research at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is soil. Researchers categorize the soil types in the forest, measure how much carbon is stored within the soil, and track decomposition rates. This gallery features field work that measured CO2 flux on logs as part of the 200-year log...
HJA Day is an open house event at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. The event typically features field trips around the sites and talks about the ongoing research and work.
This is a small selection of historical images. Some images were used for the historical publication by Max Geier ( 2007) " Necessary work: discovering old forests, new outlooks, and community on the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, 1948-2000" ( Pub No:2809). The images depict sites and individuals...
The HJ Andrews Experimental Forest Long-Term Ecological Research site contains stands of old-growth forest that are aged at 300 years and older. This gallery of images, taken in 2005 by photographer Tom Iraci with the USFS, features various old-growth forest stands within the research forest.
Stream gauging stations provide information on stream flow levels over time and over the seasons. Data from stream gauges are an important part of our long-term records. There are nine small experimental watersheds and ten gauging stations on the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, including the...
